William Heal is the Regional Director for the Eastern Region and has worked for BASC since 1991.  He has always been interested in shooting, having started beating from the age of 10 when living in Suffolk and first tried his hand at wildfowling on the North Norfolk Coast in 1962.  The task of Regional Director provides a fascinating challenge, covering, as it does, every aspect of shooting from dealing with political and media aspects at one end, to giving advice and assistance to those just starting shooting at the other. In the job, one is dealing with a very large number of interesting people who have a love of shooting and thus one feels one is really achieving something for the sport one loves.

Simon grew up chasing his meals in the heart of North West Norfolk and graduated from Edinburgh University in 2000 with a Masters in Religious Studies and History of Art. He still enjoys beating having started at the age of eight, and now combines that with all forms of shooting and fishing, and picking up when he can, although his first passion will always be pigeon shooting. Simon has worked in the gun trade for the last decade firstly in Bonham’s’ Gun Department, then with Holt’s Auctioneers, and latterly as gunroom manager for Ling’s Country Goods.

The Value of Shooting and Conservation

A new independent study has revealed that sporting shooting contributes £140 million a year to the economy of the East of England. Sporting shooting also provides 6,900 regional full time equivalent jobs, plays a major role in conserving the countryside and wildlife habitats, and provides healthy free-range meat in the region. The study confirms that sporting shooting contributes £76 million a year to the economy of Greater London and provides 2,000 regional full time equivalent jobs.
