Phil joined BASC on a full time basis in 1988 having assisted the Association for a number of years voluntarily as an Honorary Education officer in Staffordshire. Following education in London studying economics and law and several years self employed in property management in Spain, Phil returned to the U.K. and the International Transport industry before joining the BASC. A lifelong involvement in all aspects of shooting sports a strong supporter of Hunting and an avid Salmon and Trout fisherman Phil is happiest when out in the country either working or playing.

Steve Woodhall is Regional Officer for the North of England. After a career with the British Army, serving with the Scots Guards, he spent time working as a game keeper before returning to his native Cumbria to work with young people with severe behavioural difficulties. From a predominantly training and education background, Steve joined BASC in 2003. Steve has been involved with shooting and country sports for most of his life and particularly enjoys deer stalking and wildfowling, as well as working gundogs. Steve is an assessor for the Wild Deer Management Qualifications. He is enthusiastic towards providing opportunities for young people and newcomers to become involved in shooting sports.

Outside of his work with BASC and shooting, Steve enjoys mountaineering, back country skiing and Scottish culture. Married to Lindsay, they have a young daughter, Lucie, and are expecting their second child in April 2008. Steve lives in the Lake District and has an office near Milnthorpe.

The Value of Shooting and Conservation

A new independent study has revealed that sporting shooting contributes £331 million a year to the economy of the North of England. Sporting shooting also provides 13,900 full time equivalent jobs in the region and plays a major role in conserving the countryside and wildlife habitats, and provides healthy free-range meat in the North.

In the north East region the study shows that sporting shooting contributes £61 million a year to the regional economy and also provides 3,000 regional full time equivalent jobs, in the north west shooting contributes £160 million a year and provides 6,500 full time equivalent jobs and in Yorkshire and Humber sporting shooting contributes £110 million a year to the regional economy and 4,400 regional full time equivalent jobs.
