BASC CONCERNED OVER WELSH BAN ON ELECTRONIC DOG COLLARS

The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) has expressed its concern at the Welsh Assembly’s decision to go ahead with the proposed ban on electronic dog collars as it believes it may lead to more dogs being put down.

Director of BASC Wales, Glynn Cook, said: "Electronic training devices are very rarely, if ever, the first port of call for those training dogs. Reward based training systems are the norm in the gundog world, with very few resorting to such devices. However, this does not mean that such devices should not be available to those who need them as a technique of last resort.”

BASC believes that using electronic training devices on dogs with serious behavioural problems can work as a last resort and could prevent dogs being put down.

Gundog trainers take care

If you are training a gundog always seek permission from the landowner, and remember that the right to roam does not give you the right to train dogs on access land. You are legally required to keep your dog on a short lead on most access and common land between 1 March and 31 July

Just throwing a few dummies may seem harmless enough, but at this time of year disturbance to sheep and lambs can cause real problems, while the effect on ground nesting birds can undo all the good work that shooting does for conservation.

Particular concerns have been expressed by shooting and farming tenants in north-west England where moorland is often close to built-up areas. While most landowners are happy to allow responsible gundog owners onto their land you should always ask for permission first.
