"We all like to feel that we have made adequate provision for our retirement or put something aside in the event of an accident or serious illness. However, many gamekeepers and others in similar occupations often sacrifice a high salary and pension scheme in order to pursue job satisfaction and a rural way of life.
Unfortunately, an accident, injury or serious illness can have a devastating effect on the lives of people who work in the countryside and their families. The Gamekeepers Welfare Trust, with its limited funds, can often help in a small but useful way.
The Trust may also be able to help young people wishing to take up gamekeeping, or a similar occupation, as a career. Many challenges will face the next generation of gamekeepers - not least the ability to deal with the general public over increased access or their future role in conservation. Needless to say, the more funds we can raise the more people we can help.
On behalf of the Trustees, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved with fundraising or made generous donations in support of the Trust over the years."
The Trust Secretary would be happy to recieve, in the strictest confidence, approaches from any members of the profession who know a gamekeeper, stalker or ghillie or their dependants who may qualify for consideration by the Trust. The Gamekeepers Welfare Trust was established in March 1992 under a joint initiative by the BASC and the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust. Its main aims are:-
- The relief of gamekeepers and persons of like occupation and their spouses in old age or where economic circumstances give rise to such need.
- To advance funds for educational purposes for the benefit of young persons who make or wish to make their living by the pursuit of gamekeeping.
The Trustees are: Lord Guernsey (Chairman), Ian Grindy, John Swift, Peter Misselbrook, Don Ford, Mike Swan, Ken Butler, David Clark and Walter Cole.
