Fancy a shoot makeover?
This year we’re relaunching the Musto/BASC award as a sort of shoot makeover. Think of it as Ground Force meets Changing Rooms with a splash of BASC magic.
The idea is to develop the award so that it continues to recognise the work, passion and commitment to conservation that so many who shoot have, whilst helping them with the practicalities of running a successful shoot. The £5,000 award will provide the financial aid needed to transform areas of the shoot to encourage healthy populations for all kinds of wildlife – not only game birds, but farmland birds, water voles and bats.
Perhaps you’re a new shoot just starting out and would like some help and advice or maybe you’re an established shoot stuck in a rut and in need of a fresh pair of eyes. Any type of shoot, or shoot member, may apply to win the chance of having their shoot improved by £5,000 and lots of hands on, expert advice.
At BASC we understand the trials and tribulations that come with running a shoot. This competition gives you the chance to access and learn from each and every BASC department who will help you put the £5,000 prize money to good use.
We’ve made it even easier than ever to enter – you just need to fill out a simple form and submit it to us by Friday 20 June. By telling us what works and what doesn’t on your shoot, we’ll be able to draw up a shortlist of those we think might benefit most from the money.
Maybe you’re experiencing keepering issues; predation problems; a lack of wild game; problems holding birds; difficulty presenting your birds; or need advice on rearing your own; guidance on introducing grey partridges; keeping your birds from straying and siting release pens or cover crops; or perhaps you even have concerns over public access and recruitment.
Whatever the issue, use this opportunity to take advantage of expert advice and a cash injection, both of which could have you firing on all cylinders come September 2009. We are an open book – no problem is too small, or too trivial. If it’s affecting your shoot then let us help you sort it out.
Using our specialist teams, and advice from other organisations such as The Heather Trust, Natural England, the Forestry Commission and local Wildlife Trusts, we will visit the winning shoot and draw up a makeover blueprint. We will then work with you to put the plan into action, hiring contractors, sourcing suppliers and so on.
The winner will be announced at the CLA Game Fair 25-27 July, and all projects and progress will be charted in Shooting & Conservation over the coming year.

Terms and conditions
If you lease your land please ensure the landowner is happy for improvements to be made on the shoot before applying for the award. BASC reserves the right to withdraw the award at any point should circumstances compromise our codes and organisation standards. The closing date is 20 June 2008 and the winner will be announced at the CLA Game Fair, Blenheim on 25-27 July. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Competition winners must be willing to feature in future issues of Shooting & Conservation magazine. To maximise the impact of the prize money we would expect shoots to provide general manual labour. BASC is not responsible for damage or loss caused by, or as a result of, the work of external contractors. We will not use your details to contact you for any other purpose other than the Musto/BASC award.
