The Research team provides data, information, assessment and technical advice for BASC’s policy development, representation and advisory work. Our research contributes to scientific and public understanding of sporting shooting, the management and sustainable use of our quarry populations, addresses conservation issues and the needs of the shooting community, and helps to prevent or resolve conflict between shooting and related interests.

Our research directly supports the Association’s strategic objectives by ensuring a powerful voice for shooting through an objective, science-based approach to issues and problems; providing a unique source of reliable information and comment for decision makers; and linking membership at local level with BASC’s representative function and with government and non-government bodies.
It helps generate all-party political support because it provides a professional contact point for accessing reliable technical information. Our research publications and survey reports enable policy makers to use fact and well-informed comment.
Our research also contributes to the maintenance of high standards of conduct and proficiency in shooting by ensuring that training initiatives, for example to improve shooting skills, quarry retrieval and humane quarry despatch, are properly focussed.
It ensures continued opportunity for members to shoot through surveys of shooting activity that are essential for controlled shooting schemes and refuge management. Topic research, into lead poisoning and non-lead cartridges for example, as well as into monitoring of the health of migratory bird populations, particularly ducks and geese, ensures wise use and sustainability.
Finally, our research helps stimulate supportive public media by providing a clear exposition of technical information and scientific research on matters of public interest or controversy.
