If you're looking for something to do in the long dark winter evenings when you get back from shooting, why not try cartridge collecting? It's fun and interesting and will ensure you're never short of something to talk about on those long drives this season. you never know, your collection may also be worth something one day!
It doesn't matter if your collection is specific or not. Collect what you want to. You may have an interest in British cartridges, or European cartridges for example. You may like a particular gauge or cartridge like 12 gauge, 20 gauge or .410 gauge.
If you are starting a collection you might find it easier to start with a particular make or gauge to see if you can gather a complete set or range of cartridges before moving on to something else. Whatevers your interest here's a few tips for you on starting your collection:
- Try to lay your cartridges out in a drawer, or tray, maybe a display case or shelf.
- Don't sticky label your cartridges; the glue can affect the cartridge - especially paper cartridges.
- Use a separate card or tie-on tag to describe your collection.
- When you see a cartridge you like, don't clean it once you get it - it's worth more in the state you found it than you think.
- If you intend to collect loaded shotgun cartridges call the BASC firearms department on 01244 573010 for more information.
There is also a national club devoted to cartridge collecting - the United Kingdom Cartridge Club. Again, call the firearms department for more details. |
