Elected Council Members

Robert Irvine MRICS (Co. Fermanagh) re-elected for a second term in 2008. Northern Ireland seat. 

Robert is a self-employed chartered quantity surveyor and project manager.  He is the current chairman of BASC, chairman of BASC Northern Ireland Committee, and a member of BASC's Executive and Finance Committee. Robert is a member of Devenish Wildfowlers.

Particular interests: Game shooting (particularly woodcock) and wildfowling.

Michael Sherman (Pembrokeshire) Re-elected for a second term in 2011. National seat. 

Michael is the managing director of a property and electrical contracting company. He first joined the association in 1981 and is vice chairman of BASC, chairman of BASC's Executive and Finance Committee and chairman of BASC's Welsh Committee. He is also a member of BASC's Wildfowling Committee and BASC's Deer Stalking Committee.  Michael is chairman of Pembrokeshire Wildfowlers’ Association, vice-chairman of Dyfi, Mawddach and District Wildfowling Association and a director of the Woodcock Network.
Particular interests; wildfowling, deer stalking, game/rough shooting, air rifle shooting, working dogs, reloading, fishing, ringing and researching woodcock and waders.

Alan Balfour (Fife) Elected 2009. National seat. 

Alan is a former electronics engineer and company director, now a business advisor and mentior to small and medium sized technology companies.  He is currently chairman of BASC's Scottish Committee and chairman of Scottish Youth in the Countryside Education Trust.  Alan has been a BASC member and a member of Tay Valley Wildfowlers' Association since 1980.   He is a deer stalker and approved witness for DSC Level 2.

Particular interests: wildfowling, clay shooting and deer stalking.

Helen Cormack (London) Elected 2009. National seat. 

Helen is a businesswoman with her own successful textile company. She is a BASC trade member and has been a BASC volunteer since 2000 and a game and clay shooter since 2002. Helen is a founding member of BASC's London Social Club and aims to help increase BASC’s activities and influence in London.

Particular interest: helping BASC introduce more women and young people to shooting.

Paul Culley (Merseyside) Re-elected for a second term in 2011. National seat. 

Paul is a retired mechanical engineer, now a shoot manager/gamekeeper.  He first joined the association in 1969, and is chairman of BASC's Gameshooting and Gamekeeping Committee and a member of BASC's Wildfowing Commitee.  Paul is former vice president of Frodsham & District Wildfowlers club and a member of Preston Wildfowlers, Anglesey Wildfowlers, Dyfi, Mawddach and District Wildfowling Association, Wigtown Bay Wildfowlers and Halton WA clubs.

Particular interests: wildfowling, game shooting, fly fishing and big bore gun enthusiast.

John K Dryden (Somerset) Elected 2008. National seat. 

John retired in 2007 from BASC as director of the South West region after 21 years service to the association. He is currently a member of BASC's Gameshooting and Gamekeeping Committee and BASC's Wildfowling Committee, President of Dorset Wildfowlers’ Association and vice chairman of the Bridgwater Bay Wildfowlers’ Association. John runs his own woodcock shoot in Somerset and is a lifelong deerstalker and game fisherman, a strong supporter of the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust and a life member of the British Deer Society. John is delighted at the way that BASC has grown during the current recession and his singular ambition is to help the continuation of this very positive thread.

Particular interests: wildfowling, stalking, game shooting, game and sea fishing.

Lee Freeston (Hampshire) Re-elected for a second term in 2010.  National seat.

Lee is an electrical contractor. He joined BASC in 1983 and is chairman of BASC's Wildfowling Committee and a member of BASC Executive and Finance Committee.  Lee is also chairman of Southern Wildfowling and Wetlands Management Association and a trustee of the Wildlife Habitat Charitable Trust. 

Particular interests: primarily a wildfowler but also game shooting, rough shooting, pigeon shooting, home loading and dog working.

David de Gernier (Angus) Elected 2010.  National seat.

David is a clinical hypnotherapist in private practice and in an NHS palliative care unit, a medical herbalist and lecturer. He joined WAGBI in the early 70s, rejoining BASC in 2008 and is a member of BASC's Executive and Finance Committee and BASC's Wildfowling Committee. David is secretary of East of Scotland Association for Wildfowling and Conservation and a member of the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust and Atlantic Salmon Trust.

Particular interests: wildfowling, game shooting, working and training gundog, game and sea fishing. 

Peter Glenser (Norfolk) Elected 2009. National seat.

Peter is a barrister practising in military, crime, firearms and field-sports law.  He has been a BASC member since 1988 and is a member of BASC's Executive and Finance Committee. Peter is also a columnist for the Shooting Gazette and writes for Gun Trade News.

Particular interests: game, rough and pigeon shooting.

Neil Griffiths (Dumfries)  Elected in 2010.  National seat.

Neil is a deer manager and runs a small pheasant shoot and several duck ponds.  He has been a BASC member for 19 years and is a member of BASC's Executive and Finance Committee. Neil gained DMQ levels 1 & 2 and is an approved DSC witness with trained hunter status.  He is a syndicate member involved in the conservation work of the syndicate. 
Particular interests: deerstalking, wildfowling, fishing and firearms legislation

Martyn Howat (Northumberland) Elected 2010. National seat.

Martyn is a retired Natural England Director for England's Uplands. He is a part-time environmental consultant, trustee/director of the Rivers Trusts, trustee/director of the Tyne Rivers Trust, chairman of the IUCN UK Peatland inquiry, and a member of the GWCT Upland Research Committee. Martyn manages a salmon fishing syndicate and is a member of various wildfowling and shooting syndicates.

Particular interests: wildfowling, game shooting, game fishing, hill walking and natural history.

Sir Roger Jones (Brecon) Elected 2010.  Wales seat.

Sir Roger is a company director and joined BASC in 2001.  He is a former chairman of Welsh Development Agency, a former governor of BBC and a director of Horse and Country TV Channel. Sir Roger is chairman of the National Trust for Wales Committee and a founder director of Carmarthenshire Rivers Trust and pro-chancellor of Swansea University.

Particular interests: Pheasant and grouse shooting, salmon, sea trout, and trout fishing and conservation of historic buildings and environments.

Brigadier (Retd.) Michael Smith CBE, MC (Wiltshire) Elected 2009. National seat. 

Michael is a retired army officer formerly responsible for managing the entire Army training estate in Britain. He is a member of Warminster Shoot, and has been active in clay and game shooting for 30 years. Michael has been a BASC member since 2002.

Particular interest: the environmental and conservation aspects of shooting.

John Thornley OBE (Derbyshire) Elected 2007. National seat. 

John is an author and legal consultant on countryside law, firearms and deer management. He is a former police superintendent iwith Derbyshire Constabulary. John has been associated with countryside sports since childhood and is an ex member of the Erewash & Trent Valley and the Holbeach Wildfowlers Association. He is a keen game shot and deer stalker being a DSC level 2 approved witness and member of the BASC trophy measurement team. John is the Chairman of the BASC Deer Stalking Committee, and a member of BASC's Gameshooting & Gamekeeping Committee and BASC's Executive & Finance Committee. He was awarded the OBE in 2000 for services to the protection of wildlife. He represents the ACPO on the Deer Initiative Committee and has been closely involved in the development of the Deer Best Practice Guides.

Particular interests: keen game shot, fishing (trout and salmon), deer stalking.

Alisdair Troup (Stirling) Elected 2010.  National seat

Alisdair is the managing director of Bushwear with a BSc (Hons) in Forestry and Management; He has been a BASC member since 2001 and joined BASC's Scottish Committee in 2008.  Alisdair is a member of BASC's Executive and Finance Committee, BASC's Deer Stalking Committee and BASC's Scottish Committee.  

Particular interests: Deer stalking, game shooting, fly fishing and reloading.

Ray Walters (Oxfordshire) Re-elected for a section term in 2008.  National seat. 

Ray is a property maintenance engineer and game keeper.  He is a member of BASC's Deer Stalking Committee and BASC's Gameshooting and Gamekeeping Committee. Ray is a member of the Chiltern Gundog Training Society and the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust.

Particular interests: Gamekeeping, vermin control, local environmental issues, deer stalking, wildfowling, game shooting (all types of shooting), effective dog work and handling.

Claire Zambuni (London) Elected 2011. National seat.

Claire writes for the Shooting Gazette and The Field.  she runs her own business, The Shooting Society, and The Covert Girls. Claire created the Home House Shooting Society and is  sponsored by Holland & Holland. She is a member of Worshipful Company of Gunmakers. Claire joined BASC in 2003 and is the chair of BASC 's London Social Committee
