NEW - HOME AFFAIRS COMMITTEE ENQUIRY 2010

The Parliamentary Home Affairs Committee has begun an inquiry into firearms control and is seeking submissions from the public before it takes oral evidence in the autumn.

We will be making a detailed submission but it’s vitally important that the inquiry also hears from as many firearms owners and users as possible before the 27 August deadline.

We have produced a guide to help you make your submission to the inquiry - Click here to play your part in helping shooting sports

FIREARMS DEPARTMENT SERVICES FOLLOWING TRAGIC CUMBRIA MURDERS

Due to the murders in Cumbria there are now increased demands upon the firearms team. We therefore have to balance the pressure from the resulting murders  against the usual member's enquiries.

We respectfully ask for members to bear with us at this time. If you cannot get through to our staff, please leave your name, telephone number and a short message and we will get back to you or alternatively send us a brief email. We cannot promise that we will return your message the same day but will aim to do so.

We have now moved away from the media phase with BASC achieving high praise from many quarters for our coverage. It is important to start to address political issues to make the case to safeguard your sport.

The department expresses its deepest sympathy to the communities affected and of course the family and friends of the victims. We wish a speedy recovery to those injured by this senseless act.

CERTIFICATE RENEWALS 2010-2012

Due to certificate life changing from three to five years in England, Wales and Scotland during 1994, we will experience a large rise in the in number renewals during 2010, 2011 and 2012. This peak was not created by the police, and both they and BASC will be dealing with high volumes of calls and case work during this time. We respectfully ask that you bear with both us and the police during this time.

If you are having problems we are here to help, but please make an attempt to speak to your licensing department first to ascertain the progress of your renewal if it is late in being processed. Whilst we will aim to deal with your calls in the order that they are received, we have to prioritise where necessary and there may be some delays caused by the number of calls we receive.

For those yet to submit their renewal applications, please wherever possible submit your forms as early as possible. Each police force has its own idea of when this should be and most forces send renewal reminders with advice on when to make your submission. In the majority of cases this will be in excess of a month before the expiry of your certificate. We recommend, if you are able, to submit your forms no later than 2 months before the expiry date of your certificate.

In general, you will find that your Firearms Licensing departments will deal with your renewal in an efficient, timely and friendly manner, but we are aware that this is not always the case – and if you should experience difficulties, please contact the BASC firearms department for help and advice.
