BASC’s work in Westminster

Big BenBASC’s contact programme in Westminster aims to brief MPs and Peers who are unfamiliar with country sports about the economic and environmental contributions shooting makes.

Through our face to face meetings in Westminster, we aim to give MPs and Peers a greater understanding of what the shooting community does, put them in touch with members of wildfowling and shooting clubs they may like to meet and on occasion we take them out to have a go at their local clay ground.

BASC briefs MP's on the Country Sports South West Project

In the last six months BASC have met a number of MPs from the south west and several from other regions to discuss the benefits of shooting tourism and how the Country Sports South West Project can help their constituents.

Annette Cole, the project manager, explained to MPs that the project aimed to make the South West region the premier destination for country sports and help local businesses in the south west benefit from shooting, fishing and equestrian tourism.

The £1.6 million project can provide shoot owners, farmers and associated businesses wishing to improve or start up a shooting related service with advice or £200 - £1,000 from the investment fund to help with the purchase of equipment.

MPs were impressed with the help that the project has already given to a number of their constituents with buying vacuum packers, game chillers, clay traps and gun cabinets. At a time when a number of businesses have to look for other ways to make ends meet, they thought that the advice the CSSW team has been providing on how to benefit from countrysports tourism is invaluable.
