Introduction:

Arriving at WAGBI in 1978 with a degree in Wildlife management and PhD in small mammal ecology, specifically rat control by anticoagulants, both from Edinburgh University, John took on the relatively small research needs of the association at the time.

Arriving at WAGBI in 1978 with a degree in Wildlife management and PhD in small mammal ecology, specifically rat control by anticoagulants, both from Edinburgh University, John took on the relatively small research needs of the association at the time.

Since then they have grown considerably to encompass a wide range of technical aspects necessary to support BASC from local to international level. He fishes and shoots (in that order).

Amanda Holroyd – Assistant Research Officer

Amanda Holroyd – Assistant Research Officer

Introduction:

Amanda joined BASC in March 2007 after completing HNC and HND courses in Wildlife & Countryside Management. Since joining BASC she has gone on to gain her BSc Hons Degree in Wildlife and Countryside Management through Staffordshire University. She enjoys the outdoors and regularly volunteers at a local country park where she assists with their programs and practical conservation tasks.

Introduction:

Cathie originally joined BASC in 1987 in the Sales Department. After ten years she left, started a family, and later returned to BASC as part-time Research Assistant (data handling) in 2000.

Cathie originally joined BASC in 1987 in the Sales Department. After ten years she left, started a family, and later returned to BASC as part-time Research Assistant (data handling) in 2000. She has done some clay and target rifle shooting and family members are actively involved in shooting and conservation work.

Matthew Ellis has joined BASC following completion of a BSc (Hons) in zoology and a PhD in pheasant ecology at the University of Edinburgh.

Matthew Ellis has joined BASC following completion of a BSc (Hons) in zoology and a PhD in pheasant ecology at the University of Edinburgh. He is interested in a number of countryside sports including rough shooting, airgun hunting and fly fishing. He also enjoys photography, and is a keen amateur entomologist.

Kate Ives - Research Officer (Surveys)

Introduction:

Kate has joined BASC after completing a BSc (Hons) in Wildlife Conservation at the University of Plymouth. During her degree she focused on researching the benefits of shooting to local biodiversity (taking advice from BASC’s Conservation Department).

Kate has joined BASC after completing a BSc (Hons) in Wildlife Conservation at the University of Plymouth. During her degree she focused on researching the benefits of shooting to local biodiversity (taking advice from BASC’s Conservation Department). In her spare time, she is working on an MSc by Research at Manchester Metropolitan University, where she is developing a conceptual model for human-wildlife conflict management. Kate enjoys helping her Dad with countryside and habitat management on his shoot, and taking part in clay and rifle shooting.

Advice and information on scientific and technical aspects of shooting and conservation, including -

  • Ballistics research to increase success and improve standards in shooting
  • Address environmental impacts of shooting to minimise problems for the sport, especially lead/non-lead ammunition and shooting noise
  • Conduct membership surveys to improve services and representation
  • Provide technical information and advice on shooting within and outside BASC
  • Represent shooting’s interests on scientific and technical matters through national and international organisation and governmental liaison groups and committees.
