Midlands

BASC Midlands

Your region has undergone considerable change since its early beginnings and in 1999 separated from Wales but gained the eastern section of the Midlands to become the region you now know.  From Hereford and Shropshire in the west through to the Lincolnshire coast in the East we are now made up of 11 counties.

In 2004 the government took a new view on the structure of their regions by developing what they call ‘Regional Development Agencies’ (RDA’s).  These were designed to bring regions in line with one another to ‘equalise’ economic growth with the emphasis on access, education and tourism.  Here in the Midlands, we have two RDA’s, east and west.  We have been successful in being invited to join one of their divisions, the East Midlands Rural Affair Forum, which means we can put forward our views on the development of the region.  Shooting has a huge economic impact and we have been working with our RDA’s to promote our sport and in particular, to encourage the eating of healthy, easy to prepare British game.

You have three representatives in your region; Steve Bloomfield RD who has been with BASC since Feb 08 after a long career as a gamekeeper, Liz Lamb RO who’s in her 10th year with BASC and Sue Ecroyd supports the team.

Our events programme has become more varied taking into account the changing needs of the region.  Young Shots Introductory days are designed for young people to sample several different countryside sports such as falconry, working gundogs, fly fishing and shooting.  Progressive days have been introduced to offer more specific understanding of or training in a particular aspect of countrysports such hunting with hawks, deer management or preparation for a live quarry shoot.

Along with our own show, the BASC Gamekeepers’ Fair, we enjoy meeting our members at seven other game fairs in the region.  Other events include roadshows, ladies days, Game’s On dinners and members’ evenings.  To support our ever expanding programme of events, we rely heavily on the goodwill of volunteers.  If you feel you have something to offer, we would like to hear from you.

Steve Bloomfield is the Director for the Midland region.  He grew up in rural Hampshire spending many hours ferreting and shooting and learning his field craft ‘hunting for the pot’.

Leaving school at 16 to become a trainee gamekeeper and following a diploma course at the Hampshire College of Agriculture in Game and Deer Management, Steve rose through the ranks of gamekeeping most recently as head keeper on the Bretby Park Estate, Derbyshire.

From his experience over the last 30 years, Steve is passionate about high standards both in game management and animal welfare and is active in introducing youngsters to shooting sports and keepering.

Full biography/contact details:

Born and brought up in the City, Liz escaped to rural Berkshire where she bred and trained horses. She began her clay shooting career in Olympic Trap in the mid 1990's which resulted in winning the British and English Championships and qualifying for the Great Britain Shooting Team. Shooting around the world in top level competitions provided her with skills and experience she now draws from when encouraging others to take up the sport.

Liz is a champion of ladies’ shooting in this country, both of clay and game and developed the National Lady Shot register. She is also a qualified BASC coach.

Game shooting now takes precedence in her life and she is founder member of the all girl ‘Game Birds’ shooting syndicate. Now with her DSC Level I certificate, deer stalking dominates her free time.

Prior to joining BASC in 2000, Liz took a degree in anthropology at the University of London and followed this with a PhD.
