BASC .410 World Championship

On Saturday September 24th BASC held its annual .410 World Championship at Mid Wales Shooting Centre near Caersws in Powys.

This event using the smallest gauge shotgun is slowly but surely becoming more popular with both the more serious user of this effective shotgun to those who wish to try it for the first time.

Arthur and Jonathan Williams and their staff at the shooting ground had set up a 50 target sporting course with a good mix of targets, from driven, quartering, incomers and crossers, using the natural terrain of the ground the combination of targets together with a blustery wind, kept all the competitors on their toes and  the course turned out to be a bit more testing than it seemed at first glance.

This year saw a record 92 entries taken, proving that this is becoming a successful annual event, and with Eley Hawk Ltd providing fantastic sponsorship in the form of 1000 .410 cartridges per class per year for at least three years, this gives an added attraction and level to the competition, and we look forward to working with David Scott, their UK Commercial Manager at future events.

It was also encouraging to see all of last years winners returning to defend their title and Katie Cowell from north Wales do so in the ladies class by one target scoring 31. Junior William Allan also retained the junior class by posting a score of 37.

In the open class things were a bit tighter with many of the usual front runners of this event posting scores in the mid to high thirties, Les Taylor from Yorkshire, last years champion posted a score of 38, however previous winner Tim Smith carded a score of 41 as did two new faces to the competition Nick Beavis and Bob Agar. With no one else getting close to their score it was down to a three way shoot-off to decide the winner of this years BASC .410 World Championship.

The shoot-off stand consisted of five pairs of long incomers, Bob and Nick registered a score of six, this left Tim needing to score seven to claim the title for the second time. After dropping two targets he composed himself and dusted both final targets to score seven and win by one, Nick then won the resulting shoot-off for second place.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mid Wales Shooting Centre for their continued support to BASC Wales, David Scott of Eley Hawk Ltd and to all the old and new competitors who turned up to take part. I look forward to doing it all again next year.
