BASC response to consultation on Caerlaverock NNR 2009_2015

Some key points from BASC’s response to the consultation

  • BASC welcomes the acknowledgement by Scottish Natural Heritage that wildfowling is a sustainable activity on Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve.

  • BASC agrees with the overall objectives that are contained within this proposal.

  • BASC is satisfied that the proposals for managing the natural heritage of Caerlaverock are satisfactory and working well.

  • BASC is pleased that a pragmatic approach is to be taken to control the predation of ground nesting birds on the reserve.

  • BASC recognises that the time may well come when some management of the control of the Svalbard barnacle goose population may be required, but that this should only be implemented when the relevant Population Viability Analysis (PVA) indicates that a sustainable harvest would be appropriate.

  • BASC is pleased to note that there is now a regulated cockle fishery within the NNR.

  • BASC fully endorses the use of the Reserve as demonstration site for best practice with respect to wildfowlers working in partnership with other interests, such as farming and conservation.

  • BASC suggests that any future consultation on the management of the reserve is more clearly laid out.   The questions in the consultation document are neither adequately structured nor easily identified.
