BASC Response to Consultation on a Tuberculosis Eradication Order 2009
BASC supports the proposal to cull badgers alongside cattle to maximise the control and possible eradication of bovine TB in Wales.
Bovine TB incidents are increasing in Wales along with associated costs to the whole rural economy, Government and ultimately tax payers. In 2008 over 12,000 cattle were slaughtered because of bovine TB, at a cost of £23.5 million for the 2008- 09 financial year. On current trends, compensation will reach £80 million in the 2013-14 financial year. This burden is hugely damaging not only to those directly involved in Agriculture but also to everyone that enjoys the countryside for work or recreation. Whilst culling activities may cause minor short term difficulties, these will be outweighed by the long term benefits.
