Caroline Spelman, the Secretary of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has recorded a personal appeal to all members of BASC asking us to contribute to the Government's future policy on the environment.
In the message, Caroline Spelman says that the conservation work of BASC members is recognised by Government and asks for members to contribute their expertise to a consultation process, which will inform a White Paper to be published in 2011.
Defra's website says: "The White Paper on the natural environment will be a bold and ambitious statement outlining the Government’s vision for the natural environment, backed up with practical action to deliver that ambition. It represents an opportunity to change the way we think about and manage the natural environment, seeing it as a system and valuing the services it gives us."
BASC spokesman Simon Clarke said: "BASC was represented at the launch of the consultation process at the end of July. We are pleased that this Government has recognised the vast amount of conservation work carried out by our members and by all of those involved in shooting. Caroline Spelman has opened out the invitation to all of our members to say how important habitats and the wider natural environment in England should be protected, managed and improved."
